Really, really bad news
After months of waiting on the right parts and hours of painstaking, precise reassembly of the engine I put everything back together and tried to start it. It seized after running for just 3 seconds. After further diagnosis we’ve determined … Continue reading

More replacement parts
Since the timing belt was damaged during diagnosis and other timing parts are not looking as healthy as I’d like, I’ve decided to replace all the timing components again before reassembling this engine, including a new belt, tensioner, actuator, and … Continue reading

Replacements acquired
I’ve acquired another head, a new a/c compressor, and a bunch of lifters. It’ll take some time but it’s going back together.

Pulled rear head
After looking closely at what needs to happen to remove the rear cylinder head, we decided that pulling the engine is overkill. After yanking the injector rail, exhaust and intake manifolds, the rear head was a straightforward removal. And there … Continue reading

284 transaxle postmortem
The transaxle failure that occurred in Bozeman was traced to a seized stub axle in the differential bearing assembly. The 284 transaxle uses a jackshaft configuration that uses unequal-length intermediate axles to connect to equal-length halfshafts. This is done to … Continue reading

Next problem: alternator adaptation
The alternator used on the 1992 DOHC is a Delco CS-130, seen here at the left. The 1995 uses the newer design Delphi CS-130D, as shown here on the right. The engine’s mounting bracket is different because the 130D’s housing … Continue reading
